Pastoral Counselling

For a very long-time counselling was either done under psychology or counselling by the church. Today pastoral counselling and psychology can be integrated. This is done by using psychological methods to counsel while following Christian biblical principles. This does not mean that counselling is only for Christians and psychological counselling can be done separately.

Many Christians require Christian counselling and spiritual support.  The level of pastoral counselling added during the sessions depends on the client’s individual needs. Christians are often scared of seeking counselling as they believe that the only means of healing is through prayer and faith.

What does the Bible say about counselling?

  •  John 14:16 - "I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper"  "Counsellor". Greek word paraklesis - "to come alongside to encourage")
  •  II Cor. 1:4 - "able to comfort those who are in any affliction"
  •  I Thess. 5:11 - "encourage one another, and build up one another"
  • A Time for Everything - Ecclesiastes 3

1 Everything that happens in this world happens at the time God chooses.

2 He sets the time for birth and the time for death, the time for planting and the time for pulling up,

3 the time for killing and the time for healing, the time for tearing down and the time for building.

4 He sets the time for sorrow and the time for joy, the time for mourning and the time for dancing,

5 the time for making love and the time for not making love, the time for kissing and the time for not kissing.

6 He sets the time for finding and the time for losing, the time for saving and the time for throwing away,

7 the time for tearing and the time for mending, the time for silence and the time for talk.

8 He sets the time for love and the time for hate, the time for war and the time for peace.

Stress

Modern life has so many pressures and deadlines and demands. There are financial pressures, family pressures, work pressure and more. Moderate stress can be healthy but when stress influences a person’s health and general functioning adversely counselling is needed. Counselling can help the person with time management, coping skills, relaxing and setting boundaries.

Anger Management

Anger is a normal, natural emotion experienced by all humans at times. It is a response stemming from fear, frustration or hurt, which in some cases have functional value for survival.

Anger is not wrong, but it becomes destructive when it affects the functioning of your own life and that of others.  When anger can not be controlled counselling can help identify the sources and triggers as well as assist in the management of anger.
